The hotel offers stunning views of the lake and the Seattle skyline, delivering an unforgettable romantic experience. The Woodmark Hotel’s name is steeped in the rich history of shipbuilding that has taken place on this very site for over a century. Back in the late 1800s, before the hotel’s inception, the area was known as Atlanta Park, a popular dance hall for tourists cruising Lake Washington on tour boats.
In 1901, Anderson Shipyard purchased the site and began producing ferries and tugboats, marking the beginning of Kirkland’s shipbuilding industry. The Lake Washington Shipyard later acquired the site in the 1920s and shifted from wooden boat building to steel shipbuilding. Their impressive portfolio includes the Kalakala, the world’s first streamlined vessel, and 29 ships for the US Navy during World War II.
After the war, Alaska Terminal and Stevedoring, a subsidiary of the Skinner Corporation, purchased the shipyard and used it to dock passenger liners and freighters for the Alaska Steamship Company. Today, The Woodmark Hotel stands as a tribute to this rich history, offering guests a glimpse into the storied past of this iconic site.

Snug Harbor Resort, San Juan Island
1997 Mitchell Bay Rd., Friday Harbor, WA 98250 | 360-378-4762
Since the early 1960s, Snug Harbor has remained a hidden gem in Mitchell Bay on San Juan Island, attracting outdoor enthusiasts for decades. The immediate area offers fantastic fishing and crabbing opportunities, easily accessible from the protected harbor of Mitchell Bay.
Going back even further, Mitchell Bay was a prime location for the Native American Indians indigenous to the area, who gathered there due to the protected bay and proximity to areas offering easy harvesting of salmon, crab, clams, oysters, and seaweed. With the rise of whale research and eco-tourism, Snug Harbor once again became a preferred launching point for these endeavors, hosting three whale research boats, two whale watching operations, and a kayak touring company from its marina.
In 2006, a group of investors purchased the resort for redevelopment, but due to the economic downturn in 2008, the plan was never fulfilled. In 2011, Erik and Tamara Nelson took over the resort and developed a plan to revitalize Snug Harbor. By 2014, all but one of the previous structures built over the last 50 years had been replaced with 16 one and two-bedroom cabins and a new office and store. In 2012, Mitchell Bay Coffee was introduced, and in 2014, Snug Harbor was able to offer conference space for wedding receptions, corporate retreats, family reunions, or other gatherings for the first time.
In the next couple of years, four additional cabins and the replacement of the docks in the marina are still to come, cementing Snug Harbor’s place as a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a tranquil escape on San Juan Island.
